Renewed In Knowledge

Colossians runs the same clothing image as Ephesians, and adds a detail about what the new man is being renewed toward.

And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

Colossians 3:10

And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him.

After the image of him that created him. The pattern is not a better version of you as decided by you. It is the original design, and it is a person.

Renewed in knowledge is the mechanism, and knowledge here means the personal kind — knowing someone, not knowing about a subject.

So growth in this verse is not the accumulation of religious information. It is being reshaped by increasing familiarity with a person you are being made to resemble.

The verse after it removes every category people use to rank each other — Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free — because those distinctions belong to the old clothes.

Not a better version of you.The original design.

You are not being renewed toward your own best idea of yourself. That is a smaller target and a more exhausting one.

Knowing him is the mechanism. Familiarity does the reshaping.

Carry this today

Whose image are you actually being shaped toward?

Pray

Lord, I have been trying to become my own best version. Renew me toward Yours instead, and let knowing You be what changes me.

Read Colossians 3:9–11

9Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; 10And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: 11Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.
